KwaZulu-Natal Geology at a Glance

KZN's coastal areas are underlain by the Berea Formation — a thick sequence of wind-blown (aeolian) sand that is exceptionally easy and cheap to drill. Shallow depths (20–50m) and high yields make the Durban coast, Umhlanga, Ballito, and Durban North among the most cost-effective borehole locations in South Africa. Moving inland to Hillcrest, Pietermaritzburg, and the Midlands, the geology transitions to Natal Group Sandstone and Dwyka Tillite, which requires more effort but still delivers good yields in fractured zones. The KZN North Coast (Ballito to Salt Rock) combines shallow Berea sand with high rainfall recharge, making it ideal borehole territory.

Berea Formation
R35k – R80k
Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito, Durban North
Shallowest, cheapest in SA
Natal Group Sandstone
R40k – R88k
Hillcrest, Pinetown, PMB
Moderate yields; fracture targeting key
Dwyka Tillite
R45k – R90k
Pietermaritzburg, Midlands
Hard rock; deeper drilling required

Solar Pump Systems — Popular in KZN

KZN's high sun hours and shallow borehole depths make solar-powered submersible pumps especially cost-effective here. Many KZN homeowners pair their borehole with a solar pump system to achieve full water independence from both Eskom and municipal supply. Ask your contractor about Grundfos SQFlex or Lorentz solar pump options.
