Gauteng Geology at a Glance

Gauteng's geology is among South Africa's most varied. The Johannesburg area sits on ancient granite and Witwatersrand quartzite, while Centurion and parts of Pretoria are underlain by Malmani Dolomite — a high-yield but high-risk formation that requires specialist drilling and sinkhole assessments. Western Gauteng (Krugersdorp, Randfontein) is also predominantly dolomite, while the Pretoria North and East suburbs sit on harder Pretoria Group rock.
